Rotarians Against Malaria
In 2016, Rotary Prahran contributed $2,000 to buy 500 mosquito nets for a Cambodian village near the Thai border who are at risk of dengue fever & malaria as soon as the wet season starts in June. The purchase & distribution will be coordinated by Phnom Penh Rotarian Rithy Lot via the wonderful District 9800 project "World of Difference" .
In 2014, the Rotary Prahran donated $1,000 to continue the work of Rotarians Against Malaria, to purchase mosquito nets for people at risk of contracting the disease from mosquitos, particularly in Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
In 2000, only 3% of at risk people had a mosquito net. In 2012, thanks to the donations & work of Rotarians Against Malaria 56% of at risk people have mosquito nets and the incidence of malaria is falling.
Malaria is both treatable and preventable, a $4 - $10 bed net can prevent the disease, April 30th is World Malaria Day, watch here to find out more.
